Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma is a type of mesothelioma that affects the pleura region of the body. The pleura is a membrane that lines the lungs and inner walls of our chest. It is the most common form of mesothelioma accounting Pleural Mesothelioma Lung Imagefor over 60% of all cases with peritoneal mesothelioma reporting in at 30%-35% and pericardial mesothelioma making up the rest. It is essentially mesothelioma cancer of the lung, more precisely, the lung lining. While not proven, it seems very likely that exposure to asbestos is the primary cause of Pleural Mesothelioma. Persons who have been exposed to asbestos and who are also smokers run a serious chance of getting this form of mesothelioma. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include weight loss, chest pain, shortness of breath and lumps in the chest area. Normal breathing may also be difficult and painful for the patient. It is a difficult cancer to diagnose mainly because the symptoms resemble many other conditions. Only through X-rays, CT Scans and performing a biopsy can the doctor truly ascertain if the patient has a confirmed case of pleural mesothelioma.

As usual, the earlier the mesothelioma is detected, the greater the chance any treatment will have its desired effect. In such cases, surgery is an option as it attempts to remove all visible tumors from the affected areas. Chemotherapy is commenced with its main goal of shrinking all remaining tumors that were not removed. Radiation may also be used as a means of relieving the patient of the symptoms associated with pleural mesothelioma. In younger, more healthy patients, an aggressive combination of all three procedures may be used. In cases where the cancer is sent into remission, the chances of mesothelioma recurring is very high. There is no cure for pleural mesothelioma but with new techniques and continuing research there have been some improvements with increasing the lifespan of patients.
