While there is no cure for mesothelioma, there are a number of treatments that one can undergo to improve their quality of life and also extend their time here
on earth. Treating mesothelioma very much depends on the type of mesothelioma the patient is suffering from. While treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma and pleural mesothlioma is possible, treating pericardial mesothelioma is very difficult and dangerous. As such, patients suffering from pericardial mesothelioma are left with very few options that do not include the standard treatments. It is essential that the cancer be caught early for treatment to be effective.Mesothelioma progression is usually broken up into stages to determine the treatments necessary. There are 4 stages :-
Stage 1 - Surgery is usually performed to remove as many tumors from the affected area as possible. Follow up treatment including chemotherapy and radiation are usually performed. Sending the mesothelioma into remission is still possible at this stage.

Stage 2&3 - At stages 2 and 3, chances of sending the cancer into remission is virtualy nil. As such, all treatments for these stages concentrate on improving the quality of life for the patient. The comfort of the patient from here on is of prime importance. Surgery is only undergone should it be deemed necessary to alleviate pain or discomfort.
Stage 4 - When the mesothelioma has progressed to stage 4, the situation looks very bleak. At this stage the cancer has usually spread beyond the affected region to other parts of the body, making treatment very difficult. Patients that have stage 4 mesothelioma usually experience heightened pain and discomfort. At this point, all the doctors can do is try and manage the pain to make life somewhat bearable for the patient. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are usually not part of the treatment at this stage.
